Chapter Ten
Abstinence sucked big, hairy gorilla balls.
Blue balls could kill a man.
Kids who ate powdered lemonade mix on a dare needed a boot in the butt.
My sisterâs dog was a snarky little shit who hated me.
Mullets were going to make a comeback one day and Iâd be first in line.
My coffee maker back home needed to have the needles cleaned before I made my new guy a cup of Joe.
My new guyâwho was my oldest friendâwas less than ten feet away. Might as well be the dark side of the moon.
I should see if I can score tickets to a Pink Floyd tour.
I flopped to my side, Zachâs hard little elbow clocking me in the back of the head, and stared longingly across the endless chasm that lay between my bed and Watleyâs. My brain would not slow down long enough for me to fall asleep and so here I lay, bony knees in my lower back, staring across the void at Wat sleeping away like a blissful babe. My mind was whirling once again, thoughts crashing one over the other like waves smashing on the beach.
âDad, does your belly hurt too?â Zach whispered.
âNo, buddy, I feel fine.â The room was dark as pitch, the only light a small crack of firelight falling over the foot of our beds from the main room and the occasional glimpse of a moon beam as clouds parted then overtook the sky yet again. âWhy?â
âYou keep moving your feet and sighing.â He lowered his knees from my backâmy chiropractor thanks you, sonâand wiggled around behind me.
âAh. Sorry.â My restless legs used to drive Kim crazy when we were married. She used to say it was like trying to sleep with someone leading a ten mile march. âI guess my mind is full of important thoughts.â
âLike the fact that you and Uncle Wat were kissing?â
My sleepy eyelids flew wide. I stared openly at Wat snoring away, just a few inches out of reach, and swallowed roughly. Damn it. This was not how I wanted to approach this conversation. Iâd wanted to ruminate on what I would say, how I would say it, and perhaps what kind of reading up before I would do. Surprises and Sutter didnât play well.
âWhy do you think we were kissing?â I asked becauseâ¦well, I have no idea. I was floundering, and I asked asinine questions when I was aimlessly flopping about. At least my feet had stopped shuffling about under the covers. They were too stunned to march.
âUhm, because we saw you.â The âDUH, Dad!â was unsaid but clearly there.
Well, farts and garlic.
âOh.â I blew out a breath that ballooned my cheeks. Moving to my side, I eased my stiff back into a comfortable position to gaze upon my sonâs profile. He really did look like me from the side. And from the front as well. Cookie cutter child Kim always said with that maternal look of adoration. âWho all saw us?â
âJust me and Adam. Oh, and Mrs. Smythe. She was the one who said âOh goodness me! How sweet!â while looking out the window.
